Topic: Cynicism RX: Authentic Communication
Cynicism is the most pervasive, destructive disease in organizations today. At its most public, it brings down companies and their leaders. The organizational damage occurs at a far more local level by corroding motivation and productivity. Cynicism’s poison is brewed in a gap created by the perception there’s a disconnect between what we say and what we do, whether intentional or not. Rapidly spread by off-hand remarks, unkept promises, evasions, and hidden agendas, cynicism can undermine motivation and productivity with great speed.
Authentic communication can serve as both vaccine and antidote. By consistently assuring congruence between our thoughts and our actions, we can neutralize the damage. Why is it so hard to say what we mean, and mean what we say, to walk our talk? Although it sounds easy, communicating authentically can be challenging and even scary. Self-awareness and a strong relationship between the parties are needed to move from casual socializing to authentic communication.
Explore the techniques of authentic communication, including examples of how such a communication style can achieve ongoing results.
This interactive program, based on Elaine Crowley’s chapter in the Handbook of International Business Strategy , explores increasing authenticity in organizational and personal communication.
